When you enter Costco, you almost always spend over $100 each time, get lunch/fill gas and you always feel happy about it

So my dad is one of the managers at a Costco in the country and you will probably never meet harder retail workers. My dad gets up at 3 am and opens the store every day he doesn’t get home until 5 on most days. He works really hard and so do his fellow employees. I don’t think I’ve ever met a rude employee at Costco even when I’ve been to the one my dad doesn’t work at.

Amazon could technically provide better working conditions if they cut back on the profits a little and still make way more money than any other retailer due to their sheer size.

Oh, yeah. Let's get the made in China crap we don't need with money we don't have at Costco instead of Amazon because that's the solution to the problem of over consumerism.

They low ball the people they are buying from. I have a friend who was the CFO of a company Costco was buying from. They purchased a lot of volume. But his company made 1/3 of what they would charge anyone else. This is how they can offer lower prices. They buy in bulk. It’s cheaper and the companies who sell their items hope to make profits on large volumes. When it was time for a new contract. My friend told Costco to pound sand. They tried to sue over it because the product was one of the more popular ones.

Walmart is still my budget store. Costco has way less clearance. I can eat a for a week at my local walmart with bakery discount for $5, or healthily if I pop in there a few times a week for $10.

My family had a business membership there for a few years as my wife ran a photography studio with a business front in town, and we also farm. Later we moved further out into a rural area only like ten minutes more, but the drive became eighty miles vs sixty something. My wife and I hadn't shopped there for some time one summer and later when filing taxes we noticed that the receipts of our cost of living over identical periods of time were the exact same, if we didn't save a little by avoiding Costco altogether. We then figured in gas for even her little Honda, and even if we had lived within twenty miles of the store we still would have spent more money going to Costco. We were stubborn though, we still thought the occasional $600 to $800 trips were saving us money. Nope it was costing us money a lot of money. Still not seeing the light and falling for the deceptions we continued but started comparing the merchandise on our phone being careful especially on those bigger ticket items. Almost every time their was better quality stuff and cheaper prices on the web, even after any shipping. The last straw was when they didn't have egg roles and Walmart and Al dies still did. I let that rip off membership expire and realized why I had quite the Sams Club years before as it's all just a slide of hand and smoke and mirrors to get you're money with no real savings.

I'm glad to see companies like this. Today it seems that every company goes after the highest profits and the highest returns only to sacrifice sustainability. They do this until the whole house of cards fall down and then get the government to bail them out leaving us regular people with the mess.
Costco uses sustainable business practices, focuses on employee satisfaction and quality workmanship. It's a rare breed of a company.

You gotta see Costco Japan. In the 15 years I've been here I've been fortunate to live within 30 minutes of one of the Costcos, I've never seen a store that wasn't crowded. Two days ago I had to abandon my cart when I saw that the wait lines - even though all registers were open - stretched back to the clothing section. I never go on the weekends as the wait *to get into the parking lot* is usually an hour or so. Some points that may be specific to Costco Japan:
1. Their product line is about 2/3 western or western-oriented, even though demographically Japan is only about 2% foreign. They have huge bags of chocolate chips (Japanese folks don't make chocolate chip cookies), tortillas and hummus, 3 celery heads for $5 (it's often a buck a STALK at a regular super 'cause people don't eat a lot of celery), quinoa by the kilo, a bag of ten limes for $6 (usually a buck each) and a ton of other stuff that you can't find outside of specialty stores. For Japanese people it's like finding the Trader Joe's product line at a Walmart at Walmart prices. BUT the remaining 1/3 of products are the regular staples that everyone in Japan wants, and of course at cheap prices. So people are pulled in by the foreign products, then realize they can get many of their regular needs satisfied there too.
2. At least half of the shoppers appear to be "making a day of it" in the weird world of warehouse aesthetics and giants. They're usually homemakers with their buddies, stopping and looking at the whatevers, chatting, moving slowly (this is a hilarious inconvenience for me, the guy who has 20 minutes to get in and out and knows exactly what he needs and where it is).
3. The dining area is a HUGE draw. It's almost never easy to find a place to sit. Reasons? The pizza is some of the best in a country known for terrible pizza toppings (potato, corn, and mayo?) and hugely overpriced pizzas (the equivalent of a large everything pizza is upwards of $30). Plus "crazy" stuff like bulgogis. Many of the people there expect to spend several hours and get an unusual and cheap meal (so don't go around meal time).
4. The samples! Most times I go there are upwards of ten sampling stations. Of course, if you know what you need a dozen or more people (yes, a dozen or more) standing in line clogging the way with their monstrous carts is a huge pain in the butt. But if you're expecting to spend a couple of hours there, why not stop and try everything?

For me, I love being able to buy organic fair trade coffee (the Costco espresso roast are the best beans in Japan, period full stop), celery at a rational price, and of course, the roasted chicken. Anyway, love the store.
